Power of the personal – a good management lesson

One of the things I love about Twitter is that you get to see how other professional work. Recently I had a valuable management lesson from John Putt.

I’d been struggling to get moderators for #addcym for a few weeks and we’d struggled through to Easter. I’d been putting out general appeals to people and getting very little back.

John started asking people directly if they’d be willing to moderate, and in a very short space of time had got moderators all the way through to the summer.

Lesson – there’s power in the personal. Approach people directly rather than making general pleas. They can always say no, but it makes people feel more personally involved and overcomes the fear that they’re not up to the job.
